People Versus Sharks - Part 2 by Simon Patkin Contrary to what David Newbery asserts (Living with sharks, October 23), his claims are anti-life - specifically anti-human life. Mr. Newbery warns men, women and children that their presence in the sea is a visit to a wild place and “… we cannot expect sharks to make a distinction between a human and other organisms that are their natural food or enemies.” What is most telling is what Mr. Newberry leaves out. Namely that he does not criticize the nasty demand by Charles Frew (In the shark’s view October 9) for letting sharks cull anyone deemed to be “overexploiting” the habitat. Like many other environmentalists, Mr. Newbery is placing the lives of sharks above those of man. However humans are not slabs of shark bait, but rational beings that use their minds to survive. Morally each man’s own individual life is the proper standard of value and that means man must be free to re-shape his environment in order to live and prosper. This is not a god-given right, but a fact of reality based on the nature of man. Sharks lack rationality and certainly don’t merit a special home. Rather and despite claims to the contrary, sharks have little value for man. In this sense the solution is not to stay out of the water, but rather to make the waters safe by rendering sharks and other dangerous animals harmless to human life. |
